About Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada, focussed on expressing gratitude for the harvest and blessings of the past year. In the United States, Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November; in Canada, it is celebrated on the second Monday of October. While rooted in the colonial and Indigenous histories of North America, Thanksgiving has evolved into a secular, family-centered holiday marked by food, reflection, and gatherings.
Thanksgiving Traditions
Thanksgiving Feast: A traditional Thanksgiving meal in North America includes turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. The meal is often a large gathering with extended family and friends.
Expressions of Gratitude: Many families take a moment before or during the meal to share things they are thankful for, reinforcing the holiday’s focus on gratitude.
Football Games: In the United States, Thanksgiving is often associated with American football games, a tradition that began in the early 20th century. The NFL’s Thanksgiving Day games are watched by millions across the country.
Parades: Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, featuring giant balloons, floats, and performances, is one of the most famous parades and a long-standing holiday tradition broadcast on television since 1924.
Volunteerism: Many people volunteer at food banks, shelters, or community kitchens, helping to provide Thanksgiving meals for those in need.
