HALLOWEEN MEMORY GAME

Set of 20 cards. Use appropriate number of cards for your children in an invitation to play or adult led activity. These cards may be used in a number of ways. Placed facing up on a table, children can simply match up the pairs placing them next to each other or alternatively, they may want to collect them as they go. A further challenge could be a memory and turn taking game of ‘Picking up Pairs’. The cards are made with a tab which can be folded before lamination in order to strengthen the final product. This also means that when turned over, the pattern on the front can not be seen. Children may take it in turns to turn over cards and try to find matching pairs!

HALLOWEEN ACTIVITY CHALLENGE

Have great fun with your children whilst all pretending to be Halloween characters with this set of 8 Halloween Activity Challenge cards. Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do. Cards could equally be shrunk down and placed on a key ring to take out on adventures or featured on an indoor or outdoor display board and referred to with everyone carrying out the activity on floor space in front. Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together! For those children who are exceptionally engaged, these cards explored in sequence could even be set to music as a dance performance! Great for physical development, descriptive language, understanding the world and turn taking.

MY MAGIC SPELL WRITING SHEET (Free)

Why not use this sheet as inspiration for role-play? Encourage your child(ren) to place items into a pot/cauldron to make a magic spell. What items/ingredients are they placing in? How much of each? What will the magic spell do? Encourage mark making/writing on the spell sheet as you go or at the end once the potion is complete. Differentiate by what you expect from your child(ren), e.g. ranging from your child(ren) coming up with ideas whilst you write them down, encouraging your child(ren) to sound out and write words/sentences, introducing ordering words such as first, next, finally, etc. Try making it more exciting with descriptive words, e.g. instead of ‘worms’ write e.g. ‘wiggly worms’.

What is Halloween?

Halloween, celebrated on October 31, is a holiday with roots in ancient traditions and customs. It is widely recognised in many countries, particularly in the United States, Canada, Ireland, and the UK, as a fun and spooky occasion marked by activities like trick-or-treating, costume parties, carving pumpkins, and more. It combines elements of ancient festivals, religious observances, and modern celebrations.

Halloween Traditions and Activities

Halloween has evolved over the centuries into a festive, family-friendly holiday. Here are some of the most common ways it is celebrated today:

  1. Trick-or-Treating: One of the most iconic Halloween activities, trick-or-treating involves children dressing up in costumes and going door-to-door to ask for candy by saying “trick or treat.”

  2. Costume Parties: People of all ages dress up in costumes ranging from spooky (ghosts, witches, vampires) to pop culture characters. Costume parties often include games, music, and themed decorations.

  3. Carving Jack-o’-Lanterns: Carving pumpkins into Jack-o’-lanterns is a popular Halloween tradition. It originated from an Irish folktale about “Stingy Jack,” a man who tricked the Devil and was doomed to wander the earth with only a carved-out turnip lit by a coal.

  4. Haunted Attractions: Haunted houses, corn mazes, and other spooky attractions are popular during Halloween. These experiences often feature actors dressed as monsters, ghosts, or other frightening creatures, designed to scare and entertain visitors.

  5. Telling Scary Stories and Watching Horror Movies: Many people enjoy sharing ghost stories or watching horror films during Halloween to tap into the spooky atmosphere of the season.

Symbols Associated with Halloween

  • Pumpkins and Jack-o’-Lanterns: Pumpkins with carved faces and candles inside are perhaps the most iconic Halloween symbol.

  • Ghosts, Witches, and Skeletons: These figures, rooted in the ancient belief in spirits wandering the earth, are common Halloween decorations and costume choices.

  • Black Cats and Bats: Traditionally seen as omens or companions of witches, black cats and bats are associated with the mysterious and supernatural elements of Halloween.

Cultural Significance

Halloween has become a multi-faceted holiday with elements of spooky fun, community celebration, and creativity. While some of its origins are tied to superstition and the supernatural, today, Halloween is primarily about fun, imagination, and communal activities. It’s an opportunity for people to express themselves through costumes, enjoy sweet treats, and embrace the spooky, playful spirit of the season.
